History of North Brookfield FD

The North Brookfield Fire Department was founded in 1947.  2007 marked our 60th anniversary. The firehouse, located at 9199 Main Street has been the home of the Fire Department since its inception in '47.  The original struture of the firehouse was used as a community hall, often home to concerts and community dances.  It is unclear what year the first truck bay was added on, but we do know that at one time a tanker truck was stored at the old railroad station located on Swamp road. Truck Bay 2, the current steel siding and roof were part of a renovation project in 1987.  Along with the exterior renovation of '87, the stage that was originally in the community hall, was removed for installation of a new kitchen. In 2007 department members renovated the bathrooms in the community hall.

Founding Members of the North Brookfield Fire Department were comprised mainly of local dairy farmers.  A series of barn fires within the town prompted a need for fire protection.  Raymond Barnes, C.A. Kling, and Clifford Tyzack were believed to be some of the intial members.  Kling would later become the first fire chief of the NBFD. By August 21, 1947, 19 men had joined the department and paid membership dues of $1.00 per man. At the years end, a total of 24 men had paid the membership dues and were in good standing with the fire department.

The last week of March 1948 the NBFD acquired a 1947 Chevy pumper with 1600 feet of hose.
